Subject Overview

Writing

When planning English in our school, we follow the teaching sequence for writing. We also integrate topic-based planning using a text as a stimulus. As well as good quality texts being at the heart when planning writing units, quality books are used within the whole curriculum and a variety of outcomes could be produced, linking the study of English to arrange of curriculum areas.

Non- Fiction Modules:

Our long-term plans are designed to ensure whole school coverage of six non-fiction genres / text types. There is alignment with other curriculum areas. E.g. ‘explanation texts’ linked to science learning objectives.

Fiction Modules:

Narrative units progress from a focus on plot in years 1, 2 and 3 to other aspects of narrative writing such as characterisation and creating atmosphere in years 4, 5 and 6.

Poetry

Our long-term plans address three aspects of poetry in all year groups. These are: vocabulary building, structure and poetry appreciation. Opportunities for performance and recital should occur regularly throughout the year.

Our writing long term planning mirrors the curriculum emphasis on ‘fairy stories’ and ‘traditional tales’ from years 1-4. The learning outcomes have been chosen to ensure a variety of outcomes throughout the key stages and also incorporates learning from other curriculum areas.

In our school, the writing modules have been chosen to allow for the embedded teaching of grammar statements for each year group.
