Year 1 - Fruit Salad
Step 1 - Research
Within their literacy lessons, our Year 1 class read the story 'Oliver's Fruit Salad'. This sparked lots of discussions about where fruits come from and addressed the misconception that they are from the supermarket. The children then discussed their favourite fruits and collected this information in the form of a bar chart.
Step 2 - Trial and Error
Step 3 - Design
The children referred back to their research to select the three fruits to use in their fruit salad. Each child was able to explain why they choose these three fruits. Answers included; 'they are the juiciest', 'they are all different colours and will look nice in the bowl' and 'I chose the most popular in the class'.
Step 4 - Make
10 children visited the Kid's Kitchen at a time. This meant that there was sufficient resources and space available to them. They read the printed instructions carefully and referred back to them often to keep them on track. Children learnt how to use sharp knives safely by using a fork to hold the fruit still as they cut it. They also peeled the oranges and bananas, poured the juice without any spillages and even helped to wash/dry the pots and clean the tables ready for the next group.
Step 5 - Evaluate
Year 2 - Pizzas
Step 1 - Research
The class made use of our local area to conduct their research. They walked to Morrisons and located items on their shopping list, looked at the costs of different items, taste tested some pizzas from the in store bakery and asked the experts questions about their products.
