Reading Adventure Day

Our Springhead School hall was transformed into Crow Castle for our year 3, 4, 5 and 6 pupils. Many famous books were brought to life by combining live theatre, interactive videos, 3D designed backdrops, props and the original texts to put our pupils right in the centre of the stories and their own action-packed quest as they worked in teams to solve the clues and escape Crow Castle. Within their reading adventure, the books were recreated as different rooms of the castle. The children worked tenaciously and creatively and journeyed into the books that had been brought magically to life and searched for the hidden clues. They needed to read, infer, comprehend, spell, scan, skim and riddle their way to freedom, or face the Crow Queen and be trapped in Crow Castle! We are pleased to say that all children left unscathed!

World Book Week - March 2023

Instead of 'World Book Day', we chose to have a 'World Book Week' this year. The aim of the week was to celebrate books and authors whilst encouraging our children to discover the pleasure of reading. The whole school took part in various book and reading related activities across the week. Some of these activities included:

  • book exploration sessions where the children were given time to look at a selection of new books for pleasure;
  • listening to audio books whilst enjoying a hot chocolate;
  • getting comfy in onesies/pyjamas and settling in the school hall for a whole school 'big read';
  • getting competitive and designing a new book character based on oneself;
  • coming to school dressed up as a word;
  • having a whole school second-hand book sale;
  • each key stage getting together at the end of the school day to unwrap and share a 'new' read.

A Visit to Waterstones Bookshop

The winners of the World Book Day design a character based on yourself competition were taken to Waterstones to choose a book as their prize. They also had the opportunity to select some new books to go into the school's reading scheme, as well as visiting the cafe for a cheeky hot chocolate. Delicious!
